7 Fashion Tips For Women Over 60

1. Being Over 60 Doesn't Define What You Wear

"I don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb." We hear this one a lot in store — usually while a customer is holding something she clearly loves but is talking herself out of. And every single time, our answer is the same:

No. You are not mutton dressed as lamb.

Clothes do not have an age. There are a couple of exceptions — anything you genuinely feel uncomfortable in is already off the table. But beyond that? There are no rules. The idea that reaching 60 means it's time to dress more conservatively is one we'd love to retire for good.

If you find yourself complimenting someone else's outfit, that's a sign. You like that style. So why not try it? Explore a bit of colour. Add some texture. See what happens when you stop shopping by the rules and start shopping by how things make you feel.

Most women over 60 have more self-knowledge and confidence than they've ever had. Fashion should reflect that. It's personal — you don't have to love what everyone wears. You just have to love what you wear.

If you feel good in it, wear it. That's all the answer you need — and for the record, you are not mutton dressed as lamb.

2. Comfort and Style Aren't Opposites

Trends come and go, and you don't need to chase all of them. But dipping into what's current — even just 10% of the time — keeps things feeling fresh and fun.

What matters more is dressing for your actual life. Are you on the go with grandkids? Active on weekends? Lunching with friends, travelling, or heading back into social life after years of work? Your lifestyle is your starting point.

Just one word of caution: comfort doesn't mean sloppy. A well-cut pair of trousers and a great knit can be just as comfortable as trackpants — and will take you so much further.

3. Fit Is Everything

Nothing does more for how you look and feel than clothes that actually fit. When the seams sit right and the fabric falls properly, it lifts and shapes you in ways that no trend ever could.

As our bodies change over the years — and they do, for all of us — it's worth reassessing what fit means for you now. Your size may not have changed but your shape might have. A top that fit perfectly at 45 might pull differently at 62, and that's completely normal.

Our team in store are great at getting this right for you — and a tip for online: get your measuring tape out. If you're a size 12 and you know your bust fits well in a 50cm wide top (lying flat), then that is your key measurement when shopping online. A lot of styles even within brands differ.

And please — buy for now. Not for later. Not for when you've lost a few kilos. There is nothing worse than those pants hanging in your wardrobe, the ones you bought for "when." Dress for the body you have today, because you deserve to feel great in it. Be open to new shapes you've never tried either — something that never used to suit you might be exactly the thing that does now.

One more thing: no one sees the size tag. Ever. Cut it off if that's what's holding you back from buying what fits rather than what the number says.

4. Know Your Best Bits — And Show Them Off

Over 60, our bodies naturally redistribute a little. Tummies may soften, but legs often stay strong and slim. If yours have — show them.

A dress to the knee, wide-leg trousers with a tucked top, or a great pair of straight-leg jeans with a flowy blouse can all be incredibly flattering.

Think about what you love about your body and build outfits around those parts. It sounds simple, but it changes everything.

5. Colour Near Your Face

This is one of the most transformative — and most underrated — styling tips for women at any age, but especially over 60. The right colour near your face can lift your complexion, brighten your eyes, and make you look and feel instantly more alive.

You don't have to go head-to-toe bold. Start small — a scarf, a colourful top, a bright earring. See what lights you up — our team in store love helping customers discover colours they never thought to try, and the results are often surprising.

6. Accessorise!

A great accessory can completely transform an outfit you've had for years. A silk scarf tied to a bag, a pair of statement earrings, a beautiful belt or a bag in an unexpected colour — these are the things that make an outfit feel intentional and current.

If head-to-toe prints and bold colour feels like too big a leap, start here. Accessories are low-risk, high-reward, and they're a brilliant way to experiment with your style without overhauling your wardrobe.

7. Edit Your Wardrobe — and Pay Attention to Fabric

Two tips in one, because they go hand in hand.

First, clear out anything that doesn't make you feel your best. Doesn't fit? Go. Haven't worn it in a year? Time to pass it on. A good trick: turn everything in your wardrobe to face one direction. As you wear things, flip them around. After a few months, whatever is still facing the wrong way is telling you something.

Second, once you've made space, be intentional about what fills it. Natural fibres are worth every cent — they allow heat and moisture to pass through the fabric rather than sitting against your skin, which makes a real difference as we get older. Cotton and linen are brilliant in summer. Viscose is a lovely option too — it's a manmade fibre made from wood pulp, drapes beautifully, but just be aware it can shrink in the wash (steam it out).

Merino is in a category of its own. It regulates to your body temperature, meaning it's warm in the cold and surprisingly cool in the heat. Want more natural fibres? Check out the section here.

It's time to have fun with fashion again. To stop dressing around your age and start dressing around who you are.

If you'd like a little help along the way, our team in store are always happy to spend time with you — or book a styling session here if you want more one-on-one dedicated time.
