How To Layer For Winter

Winter is well and truly here, so I thought I would go over how to layer your outfit to keep warm. Layering is not only a great way to keep warm but if done right it can create an eye catching outfit!

Base Layer

Slim/tight fitting long sleeves and tank tops like the Betty Basics Kelli LS Top and Liza Tank and are the perfect base to layer with. They add an extra layer of warmth without bulking up your outfit. You will normally only see a peek of this layer, either at the neck (with collars or turtlenecks) or possibly a portion of the sleeve. Pants are totally up to personal preference, a couple of our favourites for winter however are the Loobies Story Luxe Classic Jean and the Betty Basics Tanya Legging

* For extremely cold weather you may want to add a merino layer instead of cotton!

Middle Layer

Your next layer is where we can start playing with texture, colour and pattern. Vests, sweaters, shirts, blazer and cardigans are all good options for this! This ‘middle layer’ doesn’t just need to be one layer, you can add an additional one. For example, if your second layer is a button shirt you could add a woollen sweater and have the shirt collar popping over.

Outer Layer

For your outer layer, any coat, jacket, poncho, vest or any other variation of outerwear will work. Going for a longer option is the typical route in winter! If wanted this layer can be left open to expose the layers below so consider the fit and drape of your outwear before finalising your outfit.

Now lets put it all together...

This layering option is simple yet effective. The last two layers, the coat and the vest can easily be removed if you're in an indoor setting where it becomes too warm for so many layers. You can either wear jeans or pants with this, jeans will make it look a bit more casual where as pants will dress it up.

Option two can easily have more layers added to it, instead of starting off with the shirt simply add a long sleeve top or singlet underneath it. Wearing a shirt underneath a sweater is a fun way too add interest to your outfit, simply pull the collar out so it sits on top of the sweater!

Remember these outfits are just guide lines, have a play with what you already have in your wardrobe. You might surprise yourself and find an outfit you never would have thought of putting together!
